23 April – Year 7 Literacy Day – Wild magic and William Shakespeare
Chloë of the Midnight Storytellers led intensive workshops all day, helping pupils to devise and perform spoken word stories. Chloë, who is celebrating 15 years as a performance storyteller and who entertained young people and adults at the last Mistletoe Festival, kicked off the day with high energy tales of mad trees and wild magic.
Workshops were loosely themed to Shakespeare’s magical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which Year 7 are soon to study. Chloë gave students a mix of objects, images and written ideas to start their story making. Students had to work fast to invent 3 minute narratives for performance. Teamwork and confidence grew throughout the day. In the final sharing session, students performed – and applauded – stories with great enthusiasm. Content was certainly mythical and magical, with plenty of drama and comedy.
